Former Captain Accused of Violating Passport Act Appears in Court
Accused of Violating Passport Act and Causing Damage
Former Captain Lee Geun, who was involved in the Ukraine War and faced charges of violating the Passport Act, made his first appearance in court on March 20 at the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul. He stands accused of violating the Passport Act as well as causing damage to a fugitive.
Lee Geun (39), who recently received a suspended prison sentence for entering war-torn Ukraine without permission, is now facing additional charges for driving a car without a valid license.
Driving Without a License
According to the police, Mr. Lee was allegedly driving his car without a license from his residence in Maetan-dong, Yeongtong-gu, Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do to the Suwon Nambu Police Station in Maetan-dong. The incident took place around 6:10 pm the previous day.
It should be noted that Lee’s driving license had been revoked as he was under investigation for leaving the scene without providing any rescue measures after being involved in a car accident with a motorcycle in Seoul last July.
During his visit to the Suwon Nambu Police Station, Lee was found parking his car in the seat of a patrol vehicle. Authorities, upon noticing a civilian vehicle occupying a police patrol vehicle, attempted to locate the owner’s contact information inside the car to request its removal. However, they couldn’t find the required information, leading to the discovery of Lee’s driving offense without a valid license.
Past Actions and Consequences
It is worth mentioning that Lee left the country in March of last year, shortly after the outbreak of the Ukraine War, and joined the foreign unit known as Ukraine’s ‘International Brigade of Homeland Defense Forces’. Following his return to Korea in May of the same year, claiming to have sustained injuries in action, he was handed over for trial on charges of entering Ukraine without permission.
