Gachon University decided to verify the master’s thesis of Democratic Party presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung, who was accused of plagiarism five years ago.

According to data submitted by the Ministry of Education on the 7th, Gachon University announced that it would verify Lee’s 2005 Gachon University master’s thesis in an official letter sent to the Ministry of Education on the 30th of last month. In an official letter, the university replied, “In order to meet the public’s expectations, we plan to verify candidate Lee’s master’s thesis as requested by your institution (Ministry of Education).”

Gachon University concluded that it would not verify allegations of plagiarism in 2016, when Lee was serving as mayor of Seongnam. The reason was that “the five-year statute of limitations stipulated in the school regulations has passed and it is not subject to examination whether it is fraudulent.”

The university explained that it would send the verification schedule to the Ministry of Education by the 14th, saying, “As we have to overturn the previous decision, it is necessary to convene a joint meeting between the Research Ethics and Integrity Committee and the Graduate School of Social Policy to review the regulations.”

Candidate Lee submitted his master’s thesis to Gachon University in 2005 on ‘A Study on Overcoming Corruption in Local Politics’. ” he questioned. In January 2014, candidate Lee declared the thesis to be returned, saying, “I do not want to be caught up in unnecessary controversies.”
