Gana Gandharvan’s Lataji | Lata Mangeshkar Birthday Yesudas Lata Mangeshkar songs Evergreen hits

OGana Gandharvan’s personal connection with Lata Mangeshkar’s songs begins with Ru Shiksha’s ‘Madhuravedana’. Yesudas was a school student then. As we walk to St. Sebastian’s High School in Thopumpady, we hear a beautiful song in a silky voice most of the day from the roadside tea shop: “Chup gaya koire door se pukar ke …” I do not know who the singer is. Any movie. But the thirteen-year-old would stand on the roadside so intoxicated by the song; Without knowing the time is going by.

“Again and again, the debtor would put the same song on the gramophone. After a while, the sense of place is restored. Then a run to school. But by the time you get there, the bell will have rung. Teacher’s punishment guaranteed. How many days has that song hit me like that .. ” – Yesudas’ memory. Years later, Yesudas came to know that the song that kept him still was sung by Lata Mangeshkar and composed by Hemant Kumar for the film ‘Champakali’. Even today, when you listen to that song, you will remember those nostalgic times.

Latha’s unquenchable love for songs has been with her since childhood. Yesudas never imagined seeing the celestial body in person. The way to the first meeting was completely coincidental. Time for Ramu Kariyat to shoot the movie ‘Chemmeen’. Salil Chowdhury is the music director. Kariyat wants to sing a song with Lata Mangeshkar in the film. He wrote the song “Kadalinakkare Ponore Kanapponnin Ponore” with Vayalar in mind. The intention was to portray it in a feminine voice.

Now the consent of Lata Mangeshkar is also required. When Salil Chaudhary and Kariyat returned to Mumbai to meet Lata, they accompanied Yesudas. He also has a spool in his hand which recorded the song ‘Kadalinakkare’ in the voice of Yesudas. You have to make Latha hear the song. Lata can’t resist if Salil Da insists. But there is a problem. They are sick. Moreover, he does not believe that the Malayalam language will give in to him. Vanambadi requests Salilda to avoid it if possible. Kariyat and his team had no choice but to return home in despair.

But before returning, Latha sang some Carnatic songs with the young singer. I heard Yesudas ‘Vatapi’ in the sound of a swan. He asked me not to look for an opportunity to sing in Hindi. Yesudas just humbly laughed. That was the first meeting. “The song I sang that day to make Lataji listen was later used in the movie Shrimp,” says Yesudas. Ramu Kariyat, who returned home disappointed, made his dream come true years later. Lataji sings the song “Kadali Kankadali” in the movie Nell. First and last song sung by Latha Mangeshkar in Malayalam. Johnny Sagarika tried to sing Lataji in Malayalam again a while back, but Vanambadi humbly avoided it. Sulfom K Kahte ”.

Of the songs sung by Yesudas and Lata, my favorite is Hum Nahi Dukh Se Khabarayenge. Song written by Yogesh and composed by Salil Chowdhury in Basu Chatterjee’s 1979 film Jeena Yaham. The song is sung by Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab. Yesudas and Lata have sung other good songs such as Ab Charagom Ka (Bawri), Donom Ke Dil Hai (Bin Bap Ka Beta), Aap To Aise Na The (Gahri Chot). The song ‘Donom Ke Dil Hai’ sung by Basu Manohari also has a special feature: Lataji sang the same duet not only with Yesudas but also with Jagjit Singh. Both are two different hearing experiences.
