Gangdong-gu mayor Lee Jung-hoon charged with ‘spousal assault’

The mayor of Gangdong-gu, Seoul, Lee Jung-hoon, was charged with assaulting his spouse and is being investigated.

The Songpa Police Station in Seoul announced that they are investigating Lee, who was charged with violating the Act on Special Cases concerning the Punishment of Domestic Violence Crimes.

Mayor Lee is charged with assault, including twisting his wrist while trying to stop his wife A in the parking lot of an apartment in Songpa-gu, Seoul around 8:30 pm on the 15th of last month.

Mayor Lee is also accused of striking and injuring Mr. A with his fist while talking with Mr. A in a park in front of an apartment in Gangdong-gu, Seoul in July of last year.

A is said to have submitted a complaint to the police.

However, all domestic violence cases must be forwarded to the prosecution, regardless of whether or not a petition not to punish them is submitted in accordance with the relevant laws.

The police are reviewing whether to forward the case as a general criminal case or to give an opinion that the handling of the home protection case is appropriate.
