Garmin’s next-generation Epix and Fenix 7 smartwatches add touchscreens and flashlights

Fenix 7

It has been ten years since the first generation of Garmin’s flagship Fenix series watches were released in 2012, and the model has also advanced to the seventh generation, but before that, the Fenix series were completely operated by buttons. This is the first time that a touch screen has been added. Woolen cloth. Compared with the Venu or Vivoactive series that have already joined the touch screen, Fenix mainly focuses on the group of outdoor activities, so it can be understood that using the buttons is a more secure solution under the requirements of waterproof and dustproof or wearing gloves. , but it is really inconvenient to use buttons to operate specific functions (such as maps). While adding touch to Fenix 7, it also retains button operations, which should be the best of both worlds.

The Fenix 7 series is divided into three styles/sizes, the 42mm Fenix 7S, the 47mm Fenix 7, and the 51mm Fenix 7X. The three models have many subdivisions. Among them, the 7 and 7S have three models: no solar energy, solar energy (Solar), and “Sapphire Solar” (Sapphire Solar). Among them, the sapphire solar version has 32GB of storage space, which is more than the 16GB of ordinary solar energy. Twice, plus multi-band GPS, sapphire glass and titanium alloy body, while the regular and solar versions are ordinary glass and stainless steel body. The Fenix 7X is only available in solar and sapphire solar versions, and there is no ordinary version.

The Epix released at the same time is the AMOLED version of the Fenix 7, which is basically the same size as the Fenix 7, and also has a touch screen, but no solar energy function. Epix is also divided into “regular version” and “sapphire version”. The difference between the two is similar to that of Fenix 7. The sapphire version is a sapphire glass and titanium alloy body, with 32GB storage space and multi-band GPS, while the general version is ordinary Glass and stainless steel body, and has 16GB of storage space.

Another new addition to the Fenix 7 series is a 7X limited dedicated LED flashlight. Its two white LEDs can be adjusted to four levels of brightness, and there is also a red LED. An interesting use of this flashlight is that it can alternately flash between white light and red light in conjunction with the pace. In addition to helping you run rhythm at night, it can also remind other passersby of your presence.

The solar version of the Fenix 7 has a larger screen area than the previous generation, so the difference in power between the solar version and the normal version without solar energy will be more significant. According to Garmin’s data, in smart watch mode, the Fenix 7S claims to have 11 to 14 days of power (solar version); the Fenix 7 has 18 to 22 days, the Fenix 7X has 28 to 37 days of power, and the Epix has Power from 6 (Always on) to 16 days (gesture wake). In the case of GPS fully open, it is 17 hours, 26 hours, 42 hours and 20 hours respectively.

The two versions of the Epix are $900 and $1,000 respectively, while the Fenix is $700 for the regular Fenix 7S all the way up to $1,000 for the 7X Sapphire Solar. All styles are available in the United States.
