Riyadh ∙ Barcelona won the Spanish Super Cup football title by opening a victory lock in the new year. Barça beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the final at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh, where youngster Gavi dazzled with a goal and a goal.

Paris ∙ PSG lost in French league football before Lionel Messi returned. Renne beat PSG 1-0 at home in a match where Messi and Neymar were in the starting eleven and Mbappe was a substitute. Defender Hamari Trevor scored the winning goal in the 65th minute.
