Germany rises to compulsory vaccination amid surge in COVID-19

As the spread of COVID-19 continues, there are calls for compulsory vaccination in Germany.

According to Reuters news agency on the 24th local time, Social Democratic Party (SPD) candidate Olaf Scholz, who is expected to become Germany’s new Chancellor next month, said “Vaccinations should be mandatory in facilities that care for the vulnerable.”

Catherine Göring-Ekart, leader of the Green Party, which will form a new coalition government with the Social Democrats and the Liberal Democrats (FDP) in Germany, also pointed out that repeated lockdowns and restrictions on social contact are a greater burden than requiring vaccinations.

The FDP has so far been opposed to mandatory vaccination.

The German Ministry of Health has also made a proposal to make vaccination compulsory for workers in nursing homes and clinics from January 1 next year, Spiegel said.

AFP news agency, citing a government spokesperson, said Germany will soon make it compulsory for its soldiers to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
