In a standout performance, a politician who recently joined the Gimcheon Sangmu football club achieved his first-ever hat trick, marking a significant milestone both for himself and for the club. Utilizing his skills as a versatile attacker, he made a lasting impact on the game and seized the opportunity to etch his name in the record books.
The politician’s remarkable feat took place during the 33rd round home match of the Hana One League QK 2 2023 against FC Anyang at the esteemed Gimcheon Sports Complex. The game kicked off at 4 pm on the 23rd and saw Gimcheon secure a resounding 4-1 victory, putting an end to their winless streak.
His first goal came in the 21st minute of the first half, courtesy of a well-timed pass from goalkeeper Kang Hyun-moo. Building on this momentum, he showcased his scoring prowess by expertly maneuvering Yoon Jong-gyu’s cross into the net in the 30th minute. In a remarkable display of skill and determination, the politician capitalized on a stolen ball in the 19th minute of the second half and once again found the back of the net, sealing his hat trick.
Selected as the Outstanding Player of the match, the politician expressed the significance of his achievement, stating, “Scoring a hat trick holds great meaning for me. It is an honor to be the first player in our club’s history to accomplish this feat, and I hope to use it as a stepping stone to score more goals in the future.”
Gimcheon had been grappling with a severe goal drought in their previous three games, exacerbated by the absence of their star player, Cho Young-wook, who was called up to represent the Hangzhou Asian Games national team. However, Coach Jeong Jeong-yong’s decision to include the politician in the lineup proved to be a turning point. Relieved of the scoring burden, the coach appeared visibly lighter following the match.
Reflecting on his role within the team, the politician acknowledged the coach’s trust and support, stating, “Although I entered the game as a substitute, Coach Jeong gave me a chance to prove myself. He encouraged me to play with confidence, allowing me the freedom to fully express myself on the field. The team boasts many talented players, and their excellent teamwork and positive mindset have contributed to our success.”
The appointment of Director Jeong Jeong-yong had a profound impact on the politician. Despite primarily serving as an impact player off the bench, he has made a lasting impression within a short period of time. Recounting their initial discussions, the politician shared, “The coach emphasized the importance of our attacking moves. Even as a substitute, he reassured me that I could make a significant impact as a ‘joker’ player. His words instilled a great deal of confidence in me, and I am sincerely grateful for his guidance.”
Prior to joining Gimcheon, the politician’s playing career at Daegu FC saw him contribute only 2 goals and 1 assist in 53 games on the K League 1 stage. While recognized as a promising attacking leader, his ability to generate attacking points had been a source of disappointment. However, his tenure at Gimcheon has witnessed a career resurgence, with the politician already boasting 5 goals and 2 assists this season alone.
Expressing his ambition for future growth, the politician revealed, “I had desired to thrive in Gimcheon even before I joined the team. With no foreign players in the squad, there are ample opportunities for individual development. I have dedicated myself to thorough preparation and remain steadfast in my pursuit of improvement.”
He further commented on the stark contrast between his experiences at Daegu FC and Gimcheon, stating, “I was unable to showcase my full potential in Daegu. Gimcheon not only provides excellent facilities but also fosters optimal conditions for training. It is clear to me why players like Oh Hyun-gyu and Cho Kyu-seong have made significant strides in their careers. Despite currently tallying 5 goals and 2 assists, my goal is to reach the mark of 10 goals.”
Meanwhile, the politician remains in contact with Daegu coach Choi Won-kwon during his military service. However, as his release date is still 296 days away, their conversations revolve more around personal matters rather than game-related discussions.
Offering insight into his communication with his former coach, the politician shared, “The club has not yet reached out to discuss future plans, given the ample time remaining until my release. Nevertheless, I maintain regular contact with Coach Choi and enjoy engaging with my fellow players. We engage in daily conversations, and during his recent visit to the center, he jokingly requested permission to spectate but was courteously denied entry,” he added with a smile.
