Hakan Yaman’s 2009 Yunus Nadi Award-winning novel The Woman of Photography is a story of long-distance but passionate love.
The main character Suphi is an accountant in a small company, lives with his mother in Istanbul. He is an amateur photographer who carries loneliness on his back like a heavy burden in his small world. But his colorless life changes when he photographs a beautiful woman he stumbles upon and falls in love with instantly, only to lose her in the crowd.
Suphi patiently searches for his beloved in the dark streets of the city and tries not to lose the hope that he has carefully hidden inside himself. He meets with a psychotherapist and explains everything recklessly, casually, as if confessing his sins. He goes too deep, talks about his wounds left in the hazy days of his childhood.
After a while, the pursuit of the woman becomes an obsession. We see how Suphi puts the ‘woman of photography’ at the center of her life and how she drifts away from real life day by day.
The main character’s persistent search ends with a startling finale. His uncle traces the woman in the photograph and after a short period of time Suphi finds her. He realizes that the woman actually looks much more beautiful than she does in the photo and that she belongs to a very different world…
