(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Choi In-young = The secret of ‘Tiger Caught Monster’ Ryu Hyun-jin (34, Toronto Blue Jays) returning to ‘Ace Mode’ is also a changeup.

Ryu Hyun-jin started against the Detroit Tigers in the 2021 MLB home game held at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on the 22nd (Korea time), and pitched 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts and no runs.

Hyeon-Jin Ryu, who led Toronto to a 3-0 victory after losing three consecutive losses, took the lead in the American League (AL) with 12 wins (6 losses) and tied for the most wins of the season.

Chris Bassett (Auckland Athletics, 12-4) and Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees, 12-6) are side by side with Ryu Hyun-jin.

Among them, Bassett was hit with a straight hit in the face during the game and was scheduled to undergo surgery, so he was out of the competition for multiple wins.

Hyun-Jin Ryu was in a position to face Cole, the highest-paid pitcher in the majors. Jack Greinke (Houston Astros, 11-3) follows the two.

Ryu Hyun-jin won his 12th victory after his 3rd challenge.

Earlier, in the match against the Boston Red Sox on the 9th, they gave up 7 runs in 3⅔ innings, and on the 15th, against the Seattle Mariners, they were defeated by a bullpen hunting even though they met the victory requirements with 4 runs in 6⅓ innings.

Ryu Hyun-jin took both victory and ace pride with a perfect pitch.

The changeup worked. Of the 105 balls that Hyun-Jin Ryu threw on that day, 29 (28%) were changeups.

It was a public road changeup that caught his first strikeout against Yonatan Schoff in the first inning. In the 2-ball-2 strike, Hope’s bat was caught in the changeup and wandered.

The changeup was the deciding ball for both strikeouts in the 5th and 6th innings.

The changeup also served as a ground ball maker that day.

Ryu Hyun-jin induced 11 ground balls that day, and 6 of them were changeups.

In particular, Ryu Hyun-jin caught three kills that day. One each in the first, fourth, and seventh innings, respectively, with a cutter, a changeup, and a four-seam fastball.

In the beginning of the 4th inning, one company, first base, he threw a changeup against Miguel Cabrera, who had one home run left on his career 500 home run, and ended the inning with a blow at shortstop, second baseman, and first baseman.

In the 7th inning, he walked to Cabrera and was driven to 1st and 1st base. It was a crisis.

Toronto manager Charlie Montoyo threw the 7th walk against Seattle on the 15th and immediately replaced Hyunjin Ryu, who was driven to 1st and 3rd base, but on this day he trusted and watched Hyunjin Ryu.

In the Seattle game, the bullpen operation failed when replacement pitcher Trevor Richards hit a three-run homer.

Hyun-Jin Ryu faced Harold Castro with a full count, and then turned off the lights by himself with a clean kill at 2nd base – shortstop – 1 baseman.

After the game, Ryu Hyun-jin said, “I think all pitches worked well and there was strength,” and expressed satisfaction, “I was able to make strikeouts and strikeouts today, especially with the changeup.”
