Gut health has become important, what is the worst diet? [식탐]

Reduce meat and fast food and increase fiber
Supports healthy gut, reduced body inflammation and brain health

[헤럴드경제=육성연 기자] On May 29, the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO) established theWorld Gut Health Day (May 29), this year has a different meaning due to the recent high interest in gut health.

In the past, bacteria were unconditionally recognized as bad and considered to be removed, but now the percentage of bacteria has become more important. According to medical experts, a healthy gut is a condition in which there must be a lot of species diversity, and at the same time, the ratio of beneficial bacteria is high and the ratio of harmful bacteria is low. In other words, rather than destroying bacteria, the management of a kind of ‘bacteria forest’ in which various bacteria live has become more important.

In order to manage the bacterial forest well, daily eating habits are also important. According to a paper published by a joint research team at the University of Pennsylvania in the United States in 2011, the distribution of bacteria living in the gut is closely related to food intake. Children who ate meat and fast food had lower levels of Lactobacillus, a lactic acid bacterium in the gut, but higher rates of Bacteroides, a harmful bacterium. Conversely, children who mainly consumed low-fat and high-fiber had healthy gut.

Nutritionists point to a diet high in fiber as a good diet for the formation of a healthy bacterial forest. Fiber is known to play an important role in increasing beneficial bacteria in the intestine and excreting harmful bacteria. It is a diet that increases the intake of vegetables and fruits high in dietary fiber and frequently eats fermented foods such as soybean paste and kimchi while reducing the intake of meat.

Gut health also affects mood. About 90% of serotonin, called the ‘happiness hormone’, is produced in the gut. It is reported that if a lot of good lactobacilli live in the intestine, you feel confident or happy, and if the ratio of harmful bacteria increases, the possibility of depression or emotional disorder increases.

When a normal bacterial forest is alive in the gut, body inflammation is reduced, and some studies have also linked it with brain health. According to a paper by Ano Yasuhisa’s research team in Japan (2015), as a result of a mouse experiment, it was found that oleamide, a fermented substance good for gut health, suppressed the occurrence of dementia and inflammation.
