Haas F1 Team’s Achilles heel is Ferrari PU’s MGU-K reliability[F1-Gate .com]

The Haas F1 Team investigates mechanical issues in recent races. Ferrari’s MGU-K has been identified as a problematic component.

Auto Motor und Sport reports that the mechanical failure that Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher encountered in a recent race was due to the Ferrari-supplied MGU-K.

Kevin Magnussen was checked at the Canadian Grand Prix last weekend, but finished in 17th place after being forced into the pits early on by the damage to the front wing with an orange flag.

Mick Schumacher, who was showing the performance to finish the qualifying in 6th place, retired from the winning range on the 19th lap. According to the Auto Motor und Sport, Schumacher’s problem of slowing down to a stop on the back straight was identified as a failure of Ferrari’s F1 power unit MGU-K.

The Haas F1 Team has had such problems for the fourth time in the first nine races of the season, Mick Schumacher also faced MGU-K problems during his free practice at the Monaco Grand Prix, and Kevin Magnussen also faced Emilia Romagna. In addition to encountering MGU-K problems in the Romagna Grand Prix qualifying, he has retired from the Monaco Grand Prix due to the failure of MGU-K.

Kevin Magnussen’s MGU-K is already at the end of the radix limit, and Mick Schumacher will also be equipped with the final MGU-K in the next round. Therefore, further failures mean a grid penalty, which seems inevitable given that there are still 13 race weekends left in 2022.

Kevin Magnussen’s failure at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was identified as MGU-H.

According to the Auto Motor und Sport, Ferrari’s low height makes it more in contact with curbs and circuit bumps, affecting the car more than Ferrari’s engine customers Alfa Romeo and Ferrari. I think I’m giving. Alfa Romeo has also failed on the MGU-K, and Valtteri Bottas has lost one at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Ferrari suffers from the reliability of the power unit in 2022 due to problems with the energy recovery system and the turbo as a whole, not the internal combustion engine itself.

Charles Leclerc’s retirement in Spain was identified as a turbo and MGU-H problem, and Ferrari opposed engine replacement after discovering the cause.

However, retirement from the lead in Azerbaijan is suspected to have been caused by some undiscovered damage as a result of the Spanish breakdown. Therefore, Ferrari introduced new engines, turbos, MGU-H and MGU-K to Charles Leclerc cars at the Canadian Grand Prix.

So far, Guenther Steiner, the team’s representative for the Haas F1 Team, has been at the mercy of Ferrari’s F1 power unit problem and has reached Ferrari’s annual use of the MGU-K in recent races. Admit that the reliability of the F1 power unit is a major concern.

“If you say’No, I’m not worried at all’, can you believe me?” Guenther Steiner joked.

“There were obviously some problems. Before the big problem, it was mostly Monte Carlo. But Monte Carlo had problems with us and Alfa Romeo. I hope they stop. But I’m always worried about this. “

“There are concerns. They were always there, but after Monte Carlo, the concerns have grown a bit.”
