Expansion of Participation Eligibility for Hakone New Year’s Ekiden

As the annual Hakone New Year’s Ekiden approaches its prestigious 100th anniversary next year, exciting developments have taken place. In a move to make the event even more inclusive, the participation eligibility has been expanded to include universities and graduate schools in the Kanto region. This has opened the doors for aspiring athletes from all over the country to compete in the qualifying round, set to be held on October 14th.

Influx of Participants

The Kanto Student Athletic Federation, responsible for organizing the esteemed tournament, recently announced that an impressive 57 schools from various corners of the nation have already enrolled in the preliminary test.

Notably, among these participants, a total of 11 schools from outside of the Kanto region will be vying for a coveted spot in the competition:
– Kyoto Sandai
– Ritsumeikan University
– Imperial Academy University
– Aichi Institute of Technology
– Pacific Rim
– Nippon Bunri University
– Osaka University of Economics
– Sapporo Gakuin University
– Chukyo University
– Shinshu University
– Kansai Broadcasting University

Qualifying Round and Future Prospects

The qualifying round promises fierce competition as it will be contested based on the total time recorded by the top 10 athletes from each team. Excitingly, this year, the top 13 schools will secure a coveted position in the upcoming Hakone Ekiden, an increase of three schools compared to previous years. Alongside these triumphant thirteen, the ten schools that earned the right to participate through their stellar performance in this year’s tournament will also claim their well-deserved spot.

Regrettably, it has been confirmed that the Kanto Student Union team, which has been a stalwart open participant in the past, will not form part of next year’s Hakone Ekiden.

Since next year will be the 100th anniversary of the annual Hakone New Year’s Ekiden, participation eligibility has been expanded to include universities and graduate schools in the Kanto region, and applications can be made from all over the country for the qualifying round which is to be held on October 14th.
