Han Jeong-ae “Actively participating in the preparation of guidelines for the international carbon market”

Environment Minister Han Jeong-ae said, “We plan to actively participate in negotiations so that guidelines for the international carbon market can be prepared.”

At the local briefing of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP) held in Glasgow, UK on the 1st (local time), Minister Han said, “The international carbon market guidelines are environmentally sound and achieve the 2030 GHG reduction goal. will contribute to it,” he said.

The COP is an annual meeting held by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). After the adoption of the Paris Agreement in December 2015, 16 of the 17 guidelines required for the implementation of the Paris Agreement were adopted at the 24th COP in 2018. However, the international carbon market guidelines were omitted.

Minister Han said, “A total of 90 agendas such as reduction, adaptation, financial resources and technology transfer will be discussed in the climate change negotiations to be held over the next ten days.

“We will do our best to inform the international community of Korea’s strong commitment to carbon neutrality by 2050 and to gather the climate will to achieve the ‘Paris Agreement 1.5 degree target’.” The Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree goal is to reduce the global average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees or less.
