Son Jeong-min (22), a college student who had been missing at Banpo Hangang Park in Seoul at the dawn of the 25th, was found dead on the afternoon of the 30th, the fifth day of his disappearance.
Seoul’s Seocho Police Station said, “I found Son’s body near the water taxi stand at Banpo Hangang Park in Seocho-gu around 3:50 pm.”
Since the day of the disappearance, the police have been searching the Hangang Park area by injecting riot police and Han River police squads and using helicopters and drones. It is reported that a rescue dog from a civilian rescuer who was searching the area together on the afternoon of the 30th discovered the body floating on the water for the first time. The police confirmed the identity based on the attire that Mr. Son wore at the time of disappearance, such as a white shirt and black pants.
After finding Mr. Son, the bereaved family requested an autopsy from the police. He found that there were some wounds on the body and said that he needed confirmation. The autopsy is scheduled to be conducted at the National Institute for Scientific Investigation on the 1st. The police said, “It is necessary to check the exact time when the body was injured.” It is known that Son had a drink at Banpo Hangang Park with one friend from around 11 pm on the 24th to around 2 am the next day. A friend who was with him said he fell asleep drunk and went home around 4 am. Mr. A said, “When I woke up for the first time around 3 am, (Mr. Son) was sleeping next to him. But when I woke up again, I didn’t see it, so I thought I had gone first, so I went home,” he told the police. After his disappearance, Son’s parents went to the Han River Park every day, posting thousands of leaflets to the park and nearby apartment complexes, hanging banners around them, and wandering eagerly to find whereabouts. On-line communities and social media also posted articles with the content of “looking for eyewitnesses”, which caused many people’s regret.
