A 7km-long park is expected to be created in the Seoul Hannam-Yangjae section of the Gyeongbu Expressway, which is currently being promoted underground.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 2nd that it would launch a research service on how to use the upper space of the Hannam-Yangjae section (7km) of the Gyeongbu expressway, which is promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to create a long, rectangular Seoul Linear Park called “Seoul Linear Park” in the above-ground space created by moving the Gyeongbu Expressway underground. A complex cultural space is also created along with the green area. An official from the city of Seoul said, “We plan to develop it in conjunction with the Lotte Chilsung site in Seocho-gu, which is adjacent to the Gyeongbu Expressway.”

Seocho IC (83,000 ㎡) and Yangjae IC (73,000 ㎡) are the gateways to Seoul, and it was decided to make them symbolic hub points in the future. It is known that there is a high possibility that a tall landmark (symbol of the city) will be built here.

Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon revealed this idea while visiting Rio Park in Madrid, Spain last October. Rio Park is a park created in 2007 after the M30 motorway in Madrid was placed underground.

Mayor Oh said, “We will bring new vitality to downtown Gangnam, where green spaces are scarce, and connect areas that were disconnected by the Gyeongbu Expressway.”
