(Rome = Yonhap News) Reporter Shin Chang-yong = Yevgeny Prigozin, head of the Wagner Group, a private mercenary company from Russia, announced on the 18th (local time) that he plans to recruit about 30,000 new soldiers by mid-May.
According to Reuters, Prigozhin said in a Telegram voice message that day, “Recruitment centers that opened in 42 Russian cities last week are recruiting 500 to 800 new mercenaries a day on average.”
The Wagner Group, which led the Russian offensive in Bakhmut, a fierce battleground in eastern Ukraine for more than seven months, is focusing on recruiting activities to make up for lost forces in fierce fighting.
Prior to this, Prigogine also released photos of mercenary bodies scattered around, saying that Wagner’s group had suffered serious troop losses in Bahmut.
According to the UK Ministry of Defence, the Wagner Group conducts recruitment activities by visiting Russian secondary schools to reinforce their forces.
