(Mexico City = Yonhap News) Correspondent Mi-hye Ko = The fact that Colombian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez (1927-2014), the Colombian author of the novel ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’, had a hidden daughter was revealed eight years after her death.

Colombian media El Universal first reported on the 16th (local time) that Garcia Marquez had a daughter with a Mexican artist 30 years ago, and that he is an out-of-wedlock.

The Associated Press reported on the 17th that through the writer’s family, the report on El Universal was confirmed to be true.

Garcia Marquez, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982, married Mercedes Barca Pardo in 1958, and they had two sons and lived together for the rest of their lives.

The couple settled in Mexico City after marriage, and Pardo succeeded in August 2020 after the artist passed away first in 2014.

At the time of Pardo’s death, the story of a 14-year-old writer proposing to a 9-year-old Pardo in the past, and the fact that Pardo left a hair dryer at a pawnshop when he was poor to pay for the cost of sending out ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ was also highlighted.

According to the Associated Press and El Universal, Gabriel Marquez met Mexican writer and journalist Susana Cato while they were married. Cato worked with Gabriel Marquez on two screenplays and interviewed him in 1996 for an article in a magazine.

Their daughter, Indira Cato, whom they gave birth to in the 1990s, is now working as a documentary director in Mexico City, the media reported.

Indira’s existence was an open secret among the family, including the two sons of Gabriel Marquez.

The author’s niece, Shani Garcia Marquez, had known Indira’s existence for several years, but refused to talk about the artist’s private life, following her parents’ advice to be quiet.

Other bereaved family members also told El Universal that they had refrained from talking about an out-of-wedlock out of respect for Mercedes Barza.
