Thermal interpretation April 25 is World Malaria Day. President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the 50th Anniversary of Artemisinin and the International Forum on Helping Build a Community of Human Health.

In his congratulatory letter, President Xi stressed that China is willing to work with the international community to intensify exchanges and cooperation in the field of public health, jointly respond to global threats and challenges, promote the joint construction of a community of health for mankind, and make greater contributions to safeguarding the health of people of all countries.

After more than 70 years of unremitting efforts, China has made remarkable achievements from reporting about 30 million malaria cases per year in the 1940s to zero cases, and in 2021, it has obtained the national malaria elimination certification issued by the World Health Organization. The “1-3-7” work model explored and summarized by China has also been formally written into WHO’s technical documents for global promotion and application, helping the global effort to eliminate malaria.

In October 2015, Tu Youyou won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for “taking inspiration from the classical literature of traditional Chinese medicine, pioneering the discovery of artemisinin, and creating a new method of malaria treatment”.

On November 5, 2015, on the occasion of his state visit to Vietnam, President Xi Jinping published a signed article titled “Join Hands to Create a Brighter Future for China-Vietnam Relations” in Vietnam’s NDO. The article pointed out that the main research achievement of artemisinin by Chinese scientist Tu Youyou, who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine this year, originated from the anti-malarial drug research carried out by China to support Vietnam in the 1960s. There are countless stories like this, and they are still widely heard among the people of the two countries.

On December 18, 2015, General Secretary Xi Jinping sent a letter to congratulate the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Chinese Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. In the congratulatory letter, he praised the “generations of Chinese medicine talents represented by researcher Tu Youyou, who have made great contributions to the development of Chinese medicine and the benefit of human health”.

On January 9, 2017, at the 2016 National Science and Technology Awards Conference, Tu Youyou received the certificate from General Secretary Xi Jinping and became the first female scientist in my country to win the highest national science and technology award.

On September 17, 2019, President Xi Jinping signed a presidential decree, conferring the “Medal of the Republic” on 8 people including Tu Youyou.

On September 29, 2019, the awarding ceremony of the National Medal and National Honorary Title of the People’s Republic of China was held in the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. In recent years, China has continued to take the combination of Chinese compound artemisinin antimalarial drugs and the “China Antimalarial Program”, which has achieved remarkable results in helping many African countries fight against malaria epidemics. According to incomplete statistics from the World Health Organization, artemisinin has saved millions of lives around the world, especially in developing countries, and treats hundreds of millions of patients every year. As a gift from traditional Chinese medicine to the world, the use of artemisinin is continuing to make positive contributions to the cause of global health.

Whether in the face of malaria or the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese people have always stood with people from all over the world.

In March 2020, in a message of condolences to French President Emmanuel Macron, President Xi Jinping first proposed the concept of a “human health community”. Since then, President Xi has reiterated this concept many times on major international and domestic occasions.

As the first practitioner of the concept of a community of health for mankind, China has so far provided hundreds of billions of anti-epidemic materials to 153 countries and 15 international organizations, 2.2 billion doses of vaccines to more than 120 countries and international organizations, and 37 medical expert teams from 34 countries have shared the experience of epidemic prevention and control with more than 180 countries and international organizations. They have guided the direction, united unity and injected hope for global anti-epidemic cooperation with practical actions.

On October 29, 2020, the Fifth Plenary Session of the 19th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China reviewed and approved the “Proposal of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Formulating the Fourteenth Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development and Long-term Goals for 2035”. The “Proposal” clearly states: “Actively participate in international cooperation in the prevention and control of major infectious diseases, and promote the building of a community of human health.” This is a Chinese plan and Chinese wisdom to address the global public health governance crisis.

In March 2022, my country issued the “14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Traditional Chinese Medicine”, proposing to speed up the open development of traditional Chinese medicine, including promoting the implementation of artemisinin-based malaria control projects in relevant countries, deepening exchanges and cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine, and helping build human health community.

A few days ago, at the opening ceremony of the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2022, President Xi Jinping delivered a keynote speech via video and pointed out: “People’s life safety and physical health are the prerequisites for human development and progress. Human beings will still need to work hard to completely defeat the new crown pneumonia epidemic. Efforts. Countries should support each other, strengthen coordination of epidemic prevention measures, improve global public health governance, and form a strong international force to deal with the epidemic.”
