UNICEF reports that more than 550 children have died in the ongoing floods in Pakistan.

More than 550 children have died in heavy rains and floods in Pakistan for almost a month, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund UNICEF. Many lakhs of people, including more than 35 lakh children, had to leave their homes due to heavy floods caused by continuous heavy rains. Jerida Birukila, head of the UNICEF Pakistan office, said in a statement that effective aid is needed and that many more children’s lives are at risk.
Three weeks after the deluge, parts of the country are still under water. Roads and bridges were damaged in many places. Jerida said in his statement that the 81 distressed areas are still isolated and need urgent assistance. UNICEF said many families are still suffering from food and water shortages, and many are in need of medical assistance.
Following the floods, UNICEF had emerged at the request of the Pakistani government. The Child Welfare Fund, which has provided support of approximately one million dollars, is now providing support of another thirty million dollars. According to UNICEF, 71 mobile health camps have been set up for the affected people and several temporary study centers have been set up to provide special psychological support to children.
