NGOs warn that one person dies every four seconds due to hunger. 238 organizations from 75 countries have sent an open letter to the United Nations asking the countries of the world to intervene to end the global food crisis.
NGOs such as Oxfam, Save the Children and Plan International have written to the United Nations General Assembly expressing concern about the growing food insecurity and rising hunger rates.
34.5 crore people are suffering from severe hunger. The letter also states that the number of people suffering from hunger has doubled since 2019. Despite assurances from world leaders that there will never be another famine in the 21st century, Somalia lives in dire poverty. Five crore people worldwide are on the brink of starvation, the letter said.
Around 19,700 people die of hunger every day. That means one person dies every four seconds. Mohanna Ahmed Ali Iljabli, representative of the Yemen Family Care Association, said that it is a shame that we still have to talk about hunger when we use all kinds of techniques for farming and harvesting.
This is not the case for any country or continent. Hunger is not just for any one reason. Food should be distributed as an emergency measure to save lives and ensure long-term support, the letter said.
