Hyundai Rotem delivers Korea’s first biogas-using hydrogen production facility

Hyundai Rotem announced on the 31st that it has completed the delivery of a hydrogen extractor, a key facility, to a hydrogen fusion charging station in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province.

The Chungju Hydrogen Convergence Charging Station, which used biogas for the first time in Korea, uses biogas such as methane gas generated during food waste treatment to produce hydrogen, store, transport, charge, and even sell it. The completion ceremony was held on the 30th.

In 2020, Hyundai Rotem won an order for a hydrogen extractor, which is a major core facility for charging stations. A hydrogen extractor is a device that extracts hydrogen from biogas or natural gas.

The hydrogen fusion charging station to which Hyundai Rotem’s hydrogen extractor is applied is capable of producing high-purity hydrogen (99.995%) of 300 N㎥ per hour (normal cubic meters) and up to about 640 kg per day. It is enough to charge 22 hydrogen buses and 128 hydrogen cars.

The supplied hydrogen extractor is characterized by the fact that all parts except for the catalyst, which are consumables, are localized by Hyundai Rotem. With a high localization rate of 90%, it has a price competitiveness of 15% or more compared to overseas products. It has high competitiveness in the hydrogen charging infrastructure market as it enables continuous maintenance through stable supply.

Hyundai Rotem put a lot of effort into securing quality for the successful delivery of hydrogen extractors. In order to prevent product performance degradation and safety accidents due to gas leakage, an airtight test to check sealing performance and a pressure resistance test to check whether it can withstand a certain gas pressure were performed on all pipe connections related to hydrogen production.

In addition, non-destructive testing that can confirm product defects through radiation transmission and liquid penetration was performed on major welding areas. In addition, the welder’s skills were verified through the self-welding evaluation test.

Hyundai Rotem’s strategy is to advance the hydrogen business by producing key facilities necessary for building hydrogen infrastructure, such as a hydrogen extractor, a dispenser that injects hydrogen into a vehicle, and a mobile hydrogen charging station, with its own technology.

In particular, Hyundai Rotem has received orders for and delivery of key parts such as this hydrogen extractor, as well as various hydrogen charging infrastructure projects such as hydrogen charging stations in Samcheok, Changwon, Incheon, etc. are doing Based on this, Hyundai Rotem plans to actively participate in bidding for hydrogen extractor projects at home and abroad, expected to be worth about 100 billion won over the next three years, as well as hydrogen charging stations and hydrogen shipping centers.

An official from Hyundai Rotem said, “For the timely operation of Korea’s first biogas-based hydrogen fusion charging station, delivery was completed after thorough process and quality control.” It will contribute to building a logistics network,” he said.
