IAEA Calls for End of Military Actions Against Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has called for an immediate end to military threats against Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.

IAEA Secretary General Rafael Grossi said in a statement on the 24th that Ukraine’s nuclear power facilities have suffered the most extensive external power loss since the start of the war.

On the 23rd, external power to all nuclear power stations in Ukraine was cut off. This is the first time that all nuclear power plants in Ukraine have been cut off from their external power.

External power at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has now been restored, Grossi said, adding that Ukraine’s state-owned company, Energoatom, is working to restore other nuclear power plants.

Energoatom said it is relying on diesel generators as backup power to cool its reactors while the three facilities are shut down.

Secretary General Grossi reiterated the need for stronger measures to prevent serious nuclear accidents and protect facilities, and stressed that military actions that threaten nuclear power plants must stop immediately.
