Dubai: Indian captain Virat Kohli and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin have been nominated for the ICC Cricketer of the Decade award. In addition to the two, Australia’s Steve Smith, Kiwis captain Kane Williamson, England captain Joe Root, South African legend AB de Villiers and Sri Lankan superstar Kumar Sangakkara are among the seven nominees.
Of these, Kohli, Root, Williamson and Smith are the so-called Fabulous 4 players. Winners are chosen by voting. Kohli has been nominated for five awards, including Best Player of the Decade.
Three Indian cricketers have been nominated for the ODI Player of the Decade award. Apart from Virat Kohli, opener Rohit Sharma and former skipper MS Dhoni have also been nominated. Other stars include Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga, Australia’s Mitchell Starc, South African legend AB de Villiers and Sri Lankan wonder Kumar Sangakkara.
The award for the best Test player also has a strong line-up. Along with Fabulous 4s Virat Kohli, Joe Root, Kane Williamson and Steev Smith, English pace legend James Anders, former Sri Lankan spinner Rangana Herath and Pakistan’s Yasir Shah were also featured.
Virat Kohli has also been nominated for the T20 Player of the Decade award. The other stars are Afghan spin sensation Rashid Khan, South African spinner Imran Tahir, Australian captain Aaron Finch, Yorker Lasith Malinga, Universe boss Chris Gayle and hitman Rohit Sharma.
Another nominee for Kohli is the ‘Spirit of Cricket’ award. Kane Williamson, Brendon McCullum, Misbah-ul-Haq, MS Dhoni, Mahela Jayawardene, Daniel Vettori, Catherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsol are also being considered for the award.
The nomination list for women players has also been released. Meg Lanning, Elise Perry, Mithali Raj, Susie Bates, Stephanie Taylor and Sarah Taylor are in the running for the Best Player of the Decade award. There are no Indian women in the T20 Player of the Year award. Mithali Raj and Julan Goswami have been nominated for the ODI Player of the Year award.
