The Russian goverment revoked the citizenship‍ of investigative journalist Roman Anin, founder of the⁤ autonomous media outlet istories, in december 2023, alleging his organization fabricated reports concerning war crimes perpetrated by russian soldiers in Ukraine. anin, who obtained Russian citizenship⁤ in 2006 after being born in ​moldova, continues to report despite​ the government’s actions.

Citizenship Revoked Following War Crimes Reporting

The revocation of Anin’s citizenship followed his and former IStories colleague Ekaterina Fomina’s sentencing in absentia to ​8.5 years in prison for reporting on the killings of Ukrainian civilians by⁢ Russian soldiers in Andriivka, near Kyiv, in 2022.The investigation,published by IStories on August 18,2022,revealed ⁣a Russian officer’s confession to Fomina that his commander ordered the soldiers to kill residents. “Dispose of Them: The Commander Ordered” details this confession and the events in Andriivka.

Prior Investigation Linked paratroopers⁣ to Bucha

This action builds on previous scrutiny of IStories’ ⁢reporting. in June 2022, IStories ⁢identified paratroopers present in Bucha during another series of alleged atrocities. “Eight‌ Pskov Paratroopers in Bucha” details‍ the identification of these soldiers and their presence in the city during the period when evidence of civilian killings emerged.

anin Vows to Continue Reporting

Despite the loss of his Russian citizenship, Anin has stated his work will not be⁢ affected.He told the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists‌ (ICIJ), “It will not affect my work in any⁣ way.”​ Anin is a member of ICIJ, a global network of investigative‍ journalists.
