On Monday evening, Eddie Stansberry, Hawaii basketball player, was nominated as the Great Western Conference Weekly Player.

But Champaign would not celebrate that night.

The Rainbow Warriors ’shooting victory marked the victory of Illinois 66-53 by 11,589 in the State Farm Center on the Champaign, Ill campus.

The Fighting Illini won all eight meetings against 'Bows', which are 0-7 in road games against the Big Ten Provinces. The Illini improved to 3-1. The Bows dropped; to 3-2.

“I thought we got to grips with the first 30 minutes of the game, and then I think we spent down,” said Chris Gerlufsen, UH's main active partner, in a post-match phone call.

It was connected at 26 at the transition while the Bows were; limited to 12-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-12 from the back of the arc. The Bows didn't try to throw free in the first half. The Illini made eight of the 11 before the half-time show.

“We didn't hit the ball well in the first half,” said Gerlufsen. “If we were just decent… if you go up half-time up to six points, then it presents a little different sentiment in Illinois's presentation coming out of half-time.” T

In the first half, the 'Bows' was changed; between matching belt and face-to-man protection to delay Kofi Cockburn, a 70-pound center, stop and harass quickly. But with the 'Bows in broken trouble – they were called twice for swimming and they were not rewarded when Cockburn was in charge of Zigmars Raimo – the Illini attacked the low job without stopping.

Cockburn finished with 15 points and 14 reversals, using Dawson Carper's absences due to foul difficulties. Carper left, who played his best defense game in the season perhaps, with the fifth foul.

The 'Bows' cut; a 10 point deficit to 52-47 when Raimo slipped down a defendant for a player with 7:19 to play.

But then the Illini went on with a 14-2 boost to move out of his reach. Garda Trent Frazier took advantage of a retreating defense to hit outside shots. He finished with 13 points. Giorgi Bezhanishvili was a nuisance from near and far, taking 10 points, helping nine goals and three with Cockburn.

“They are a well-trained team,” said Gerlufsen. “They are a hard team. They are hard staff. I think we could have helped ourselves a little more about how we did. ”

Raimo is in charge of the 'Bows'; with 16 points. Stansberry and point guard Trew Buggs together for 16 points on 7-for-26 shooting. Buggs lost all three of his 3rds and Stansberry made just two of nine out of the arc.

“I am proud of the fight,” said Gerlufsen. “I am proud of the effort. This is probably one of the bigger and more physical teams you might face. I thought we stood up with them for 30 minutes. Were we happy with the result? Not sure. But it is a game that could be better in the long term if we use it in the right way. ”
