Re-examination Finds Improved Quality in Previously Inadequate 5G Service Areas
In a recent re-evaluation of 5G service areas that were deemed inadequate in the government’s telecommunications service quality evaluation last year, it was discovered that a majority of them have shown significant improvements in terms of quality. However, certain areas, especially within LTE networks like subways, continue to suffer from insufficient communication quality.
On the 6th of this month, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) conducted a review to assess the progress made in the 79 areas where inadequate quality was identified in last year’s communication service quality evaluation. Encouragingly, quality improvements were observed in 54 of these regions.
However, it is worth noting that there are still five places where the quality remains unchanged, and all of them are LG U+ LTE sections, primarily concentrated in the subway and high-speed rail sections, such as Metropolitan Line 2 Hongik University.
In contrast, both SK Telecom (in eight locations) and KT (in 27 locations) have managed to improve on all areas characterized as having insufficient 5G/LTE services during the previous year’s quality evaluation.
To identify poor quality areas, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Intelligent Information Society Agency employ an annual communication service quality evaluation based on a handover success rate of 90% or less. These areas and the respective operators are then disclosed to the public.
Kim Gyeong-man, the director-general of communication policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, commented, “Efforts to improve the quality of 5G services have been apparent, with unsatisfactory areas being successfully addressed. Moving forward, we will conduct further evaluations and relentlessly strive for quality enhancement during the latter part of the service quality evaluation.”

As a result of a re-examination of 5G service areas identified as ‘inadequate’ in the government’s telecommunications service quality evaluation last year, it was found that most of them had improved quality.
However, in some LTE networks such as subways, there were places where the quality of communication was still insufficient.
Today (6th) the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) reviewed whether quality had improved in 79 areas where insufficient quality was identified in last year’s communication service quality evaluation. Quality improvements were identified in 54 of the regions.
All 5 places where quality is not improved are LG U+ LTE sections △Metropolitan Line 2 Hongik Univ. It was mainly concentrated in the subway and high-speed rail sections.
SK Telecom (8 locations) and KT (27 locations) were found to have improved all areas where 5G/LTE services were insufficient during last year’s quality evaluation.
The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Intelligent Information Society Agency classify areas with a handover success rate of 90% or less as poor quality areas through annual communication service quality evaluations, and disclose the areas and operators.
Kim Gyeong-man, director general of communication policy at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “It seems that efforts have been made to improve the quality of 5G services, such as improving all unsatisfactory areas. In the second half of the service quality evaluation communication, we will will check again and continue to drive quality improvement.”
