In jail with injuries after police arrest, died a day later

On Saturday (June 3) around 3:30 pm, the victim was taken to the Kurigram General Hospital in a critical condition, where the doctor on duty declared him dead. He was arrested last Thursday (June 1) under section 151 and sent to jail.

Abu Chayem of District Jail has confirmed this information.

Hajti’s name is Ekramul Hossain Ershad (24). He is the son of Shaukat Ali of Kamat Angaria village of Sadar Union of Bhurungamari Upazila. It is known that he is an identified drug dealer in the area. Bhurungamari Police Station said that there are more than seven drug cases in his name.

However, Ekramul’s family claims that after the arrest that day, the police did not find anything from Ershad. The police physically tortured him. This is why he died while in prison.

Ekramul’s wife Aduri and elder sister Shiuli Begum said that last Wednesday (31 May) Ershad was arrested from the side of the house by Bhurungamari police station. After that, he was severely beaten. When he fell ill, he was admitted to Bhurungamari Health Complex. The next day, when he was taken to court sick, the court sent him to jail.

Ershad’s elder sister Shiuli said, ‘The police came and took her to beat her. I didn’t get anything from my brother. He was taken to the police station and beaten again. My brother wanted to ruin his life for arguing. He died because of torturing my brother. We want justice for this.’

Ershad’s wife Aduri Begum said, ‘My husband has been wronged. I want justice for this.’

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhurungamari police station. Nazrul Islam said, ‘When Ershad was detained, he had a fight with the police. He fell and got hurt. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Later, he was arrested under section 151 and sent to jail through the court.

Abu Chayem of the district said, “The accused was sent to prison with hospital papers. Physical assault was written on the paper. We kept him in jail. When he fell ill on Saturday afternoon, he was sent to Kurigram General Hospital. The doctor on duty there declared him dead.

The district said that Ekramul had been jailed several times before.
