NACC Region 9 Files Charges Against 27 Individuals in Conch Shell Fish Cases
In a recent development, NACC Region 9 has taken action against 27 cases of conch shell fish. Local residents in Songkhla are putting pressure on the Chief Minister to address this issue.
Amidst this controversy, there has been a call for progress in the construction of the Aquaculture Study Center or Conch Shell Aquarium. Located within the premises of Tinsulanonda Fisheries College in Songkhla Province, this facility is under the supervision of the Office of the Vocational Education Commission (VEC), Ministry of Education (MOE). Although a budget of 1,400 million baht has already been allocated, the construction work remains incomplete even after 15 years.
On September 27th, Mr. Pattanapong Chanphetpool, the Assistant Secretary General of NACC Region 9, reported the matter to the Secretary General of the Commission. The NACC central office has since been informed that charges have been filed against a total of 27 individuals, who are presently undergoing hearings to explain their actions. Region 9 NACC will continue to update the public on the progress of these cases.
Mr. Preecha Sukkasem, a former student of Tinsulanonda Fisheries College and a member of the Songkhla Citizens Network, disclosed that they have raised concerns with relevant agencies numerous times in the past, in an effort to expedite the completion of the project. However, their efforts seemed to be ineffective. Therefore, Mr. Sukkasem now appeals to Prime Minister Settha Thavisin, urging him to recognize the importance of this project and allocate the necessary funds for its completion. He suggests that the aquarium could be preserved as it is, or alternatively, the purpose of the conch shell building could be modified to ensure its utilization, thereby avoiding the waste of a substantial budget. It is crucial that corruption be investigated and the project be independently evaluated in order to move forward.
