| Increase in the number of hospitalized children in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG: South African health workers say there has been an increase in the number of children hospitalized with the virus in the country during the Omicron outbreak. It is reported that the number of children under the age of five who seek treatment for the new variant is around 10%. In addition, the virus is most prevalent in children aged 10-14 years. There is an increase in the number of Omicron seizures in all age groups over the previous variants.

Of particular concern is the number of people under the age of five who have to be hospitalized. Statistics show that those under the age of 60 are second only to those under the age of 60 in hospital. Vaccination has not been started in South Africa for people under 12 years of age. It has been suggested that this may be the reason for the increase in the number of children infected with the virus.

South African health experts have found that omicron is three times more likely to be detected in Kovida – free people than in the Delta and Beta variants. On Thursday alone, 11,535 Kovid cases were reported in the country.
