Chennai: India struggled in the first innings of the first Test against England in front of a huge score of visitors. In reply to England’s 578 for 10 in the first innings, India lost four wickets. India were 153 for four in 40.2 overs.

Joffre Archer and Dominic Bess led India’s opening line to respond to England’s huge score. Cheteshwar Pujara (53) and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh (54) are batting for India. India are 424 runs behind at the tea break.

Rohit Sharma (6), Shubhman Gill (29), Virat Kohli (11) and Ajinkya Rahane (1) were the other wicket-takers for India. Rohit and Gill were returned by the archer. Kohli and Rahane fell in front of Dominic Bess.

Earlier, England were bowled out for 578 on the strength of a double century by captain Joe Root. The visitors, who started the third day at 555 for eight, could only muster 23 runs. Dominic Bess (34) and James Anderson (1) lost their wickets on the third day. This is the first time since 2011 that India have conceded more than 550 runs in an innings at home.
