Kanpur: Former India captain and commentator Aakash Chopra has named Shreyas Iyer in his squad for the inaugural Test against India vs New Zealand. The former opener added that even if R returns to the Indian playing XI in the second Test against New Zealand in Mumbai, Shreyas will be in the squad and someone else will have to leave. Shreyas scored 170 runs in two innings against the Kiwis in the Kanpur Test.

‘The only Indian to score a century and a half-century in his Test debut. Shreyas’ first innings was impressive. The second inning was more challenging and more satisfying. He scored 65 runs under heavy pressure. Shreyas has been left out of the squad. Don’t even think about omitting Shreyas in the next Test. It does not matter who comes into the playing XI. “Someone has to go out, but not Shreyas Iyer,” Chopra told Star Sports. Chopra’s reaction is that Virat Kohli is about to return to the team for the Mumbai Tests.

Shreyas Iyer became the first Indian to score a century in the first innings of a Test and 50+ in the second innings in Kanpur. Shreyas scored 105 off 171 balls in the first innings and 65 off 125 balls in the second innings. Shreyas Iyer became the 10th player in Test history to score a century and then a 50+ in an innings. Iyer was dismissed twice by pacer Tim Southee.

Shreyas became the third player to score 50+ in two innings of his Test debut in the Indian shirt. Dilwar Hussain (59, 57) against England in Kolkata in the 1933/34 season and Sunil Gavaskar (65, 67) in the 1970/71 season against the Windies in Port of Spain had previously achieved this feat. Shreyas is the third highest run scorer in Test cricket in India. Shikhar Dhawan (187), Rohit Sharma (177) and Shreyas Iyer (170) are in the record books.
