Kolkata: India’s tour of South Africa, which has been postponed due to the Omicron threat, will begin on December 26. India will play three Tests and one ODI in South Africa. The four-match T20 series, meanwhile, will be played later. The date will be announced later.

The first Test will be played on Boxing Day. Durban has traditionally been the venue for the Boxing Day Test. But this time the venue may be shifted to Centurion. In addition to Centurion, the tournament will be held in Wanderers, Cape Town and Paul.

Earlier, the BCCI Annual General Meeting (BCCI AGM) in Kolkata today decided to postpone the tour in the wake of the Omicron variant. The South Africa-India series, which consists of three Tests, one ODI and four T20Is, was earlier scheduled to be played from December 17 to January 26.

The Indian team was expected to fly to South Africa on December 8 or 9 after the end of the Test series against New Zealand. But the trip may be delayed due to the series being extended. The BCCI has yet to recall the India A team from South Africa, which is playing three four – day unofficial Test matches. Earlier, South Africa had extended the three-match ODI series against the Netherlands against the backdrop of Omikron.

The South African Cricket Board had hoped that the cricket series against India would continue despite the Omicron threat. The South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs had stated that South Africa would take all precautionary measures to ensure the health and safety of the Indian team.
