Stockholm: Infamous Swedish painter Lars Wilkes, 75, has died in a car crash. The accident happened when he was traveling in a civilian police vehicle with his security guards. Two policemen were killed in the incident. The truck collided with a truck near the southern Swedish town of Margarid. The truck driver was injured.

‘Like any other road accident, this one is being investigated. There will be a serious investigation as two policemen were involved. A special unit of the prosecutor’s office has been assigned to investigate, “a police spokesman told AFP. Local media reported that Wilkes’ car was speeding. A large fire broke out after the accident and several emergency vehicles arrived at the scene.

In 2007, Lars Wilkes drew a cartoon of the Prophet in a Danish newspaper. Wilkes then made headlines around the world. There was widespread protest from Muslims against the cartoonist. The then Prime Minister of Sweden Friedrich Reinfeldin met with ambassadors from 22 Muslim countries. In 2015, Wilkes said he was the target of an attack in Copenhagen. Although a cartoonist, Wilkes was basically a painter and installation artist.
