Intel says its 5.5GHz i9-12900KS is the fastest desktop processor in the world

Intel

Intel has revealed a Core i9-12900KS “Special Edition” processor, which it calls “the fastest desktop processor in the world.” The i9-12900KS is based on the i9-12900K and has the same 8P8E 16 core 24 thread architecture, but Intel has increased the maximum overclock from 5.2GHz to 5.5GHz (can be applied to up to two cores), and increased the TDP from 125W to 150W. Of course, as a top-level “special edition” processor, its price is also quite astonishing. The wholesale price has reached US$739, and the retail price may have to go up a level.

In the competition for the title of “world’s fastest desktop processor”, AMD has two candidates, one is the 16-core R9 5950X, and the other is the R7 5800X3D, which has just released its launch date. From the perspective of pure computing power, it should not be a problem for the i9-12900KS to exceed the 5950X, but the 5950X has a lot of advantages in terms of TDP wattage and price; and whether it can surpass the 5800X3D with a 96MB L3 cache, then Maybe it depends on the properties of the app (or game).

However, the so-called “fastest” has always been replaced by frequent replacements. AMD’s Zen 4 Ryzen 7000 processors will be available in the second half of this year, or even as early as the beginning of the third quarter, and that’s when the real battle begins.
