IOC condemns Russia for violating Olympic truce resolution

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued a statement condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The IOC said on its official website, “We strongly condemn the Russian government for violating the Olympic cease-fire resolution.”

The Olympic Truce Resolution has been adopted every two years since 1993, in the year immediately preceding the Olympic Games, in honor of the ancient Greek tradition of cessation of all hostilities during the Olympic Games.

Ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, according to the agreement of 193 member states at the UN General Assembly in December last year, a cease-fire period was extended from seven days before the opening of the Olympics (January 28) to seven days after the closing of the Paralympic Games (March 20). has been declared.

IOC Chairman Thomas Bach said in his congratulatory speech at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics, “Under the banner of peace, the spirit of the Olympics, we appeal to all political powers around the world. Please keep the Olympic truce promise. Let’s give peace a chance.”

At the closing ceremony, IOC President Bach asked political leaders to be inspired by the example of solidarity and peace of the Olympic athletes.

The IOC said it was “seriously concerned about the safety of the Olympic community, including Ukraine, due to the Russian invasion.”
