At the early morning of the 15th (10 am on the 14th, U.S. time), Apple unveiled the iPad 9th and iPad mini 6th generation products with enhanced AP (application processor) and front camera through a new product unveiling event.
The 9th generation iPad replaced the AP with the A13 Bionic, and the 6th generation iPad mini was equipped with the same A15 Bionic as the iPhone 13.
In addition, in consideration of the increased demand for video calls and online meetings due to COVID-19, the front FaceTime camera has been upgraded to 12 megapixels, just like the iPad Pro.
■ iPad 9th generation “As it is, replacing the AP and front camera”
The 9th generation iPad replaced the AP with the A13 Bionic used in the iPhone 11. Apple explained that “through the AP replacement, the performance of the processor (CPU), graphics chipset (GPU) and neural engine has improved by more than 20% compared to the previous product.”
The size is 174.1mm in width and 250.6mm in height, so it is expected that existing screen protection films and cases can be used as they are. The weight is 490 g for the Wi-Fi version and 495 g for the cellular version, and there is no significant change compared to the previous model.
Like the iPad Pro released in the first half of this year, the front camera has been improved to 12 megapixels, and it also supports a center stage function that automatically focuses and adjusts the frame by recognizing who is illuminating the camera. Apple said that the center stage function is supported by major apps such as Zoom and TikTok.
The screen size is 10.2 inches and the resolution is 2160 x 1620 pixels. Charging and data transfer still use a Lightning cable, and the Apple Pencil uses an older version. It seems to be a choice to lower the unit price in the education market, which accounts for the largest demand.
It comes in two colors, space gray and silver, and the price starts at 449,000 won for the Wi-Fi version and 619,000 won for the cellular version based on the 64GB model. The minimum storage capacity has been doubled from 32GB to 64GB. The domestic release date has yet to be determined.
■ iPad mini 6th generation “With the latest AP, Apple Pencil 2nd generation support”
The iPad mini 6th generation is similar in design to the iPad Air or iPad Pro. The display uses the same Liquid Retina display as the iPad Air to play HDR content, and the resolution has also been increased from 2048×1536 pixels to 2266×1488 pixels.
The screen size has been increased from 7.9 inches to 8.3 inches, but the vertical length has been reduced from 203.2 mm to 195.4 mm. The thickness only increased by 0.2mm and the weight dropped to less than 300g.
It is equipped with the most powerful A15 Bionic chip among iPads except for the iPad Pro, so performance can be improved in general tasks and games, and 5G mobile communication is also supported. Like the iPad Pro or Air, charging and connecting peripherals are done through the USB-C port.
The front camera has been upgraded to the same 12 megapixel class as the 9th generation iPad, and the rear camera can record 4K videos with an aperture of f/1.8. Apple Pencil is compatible with 2nd generation products.
The colors are purple, pink, starlight, and space gray, and the price starts at 580,000 won for the Wi-Fi version and 750,000 won for the cellular (5G) version based on the 64GB product. The domestic release date has not been decided.
