IPL Women | Women’s IPL is coming; Where is the competition? Everything you need to know

Cricket fans are eager to know about the much awaited Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL) which is starting this year. Women’s IPL is a major milestone in women’s cricket globally.

In October last year, the general body of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had given its go-ahead for the Women’s Indian Premier League (WIPL), a T20 tournament for women cricketers. On December 9 last, the BCCI had also invited bids for the media rights tender for the 2023-2027 WIPL seasons.

When and where will the WIPL league start?

WIPL 2023 is expected to be held between 3 and 26 March. Initially, BCCI presented two proposals to host the league. One was to choose one city from each of the six zones (North, East, West, South, Central and North East) to host the games, and the other was to host the tournament in the current IPL venues. At the moment the board has shortlisted 10 cities in its tender with locations and stadium capacity.

Ahmedabad (Narendra Modi Stadium, capacity 112,560), Kolkata (Eden Gardens, 65,000), Chennai (MA Chidambaram Stadium, 50,000), Bangalore (M Chinnaswamy Stadium, 42,000), Delhi (Arun Jaitley Stadium, 55,000), DhAamsala Stadium (55,000 ), 20,900), Guwahati (Barsapara Stadium, 38,650), Indore (Holkar Stadium, 26,900), Lucknow (AB Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, 48,800) and Mumbai (Wankhede / DY Patil / Brabone Stadiums) are the cities and stadiums on the short list.

WIPL How many games and how many teams?

The league will have five franchise teams playing a total of 22 games. The league matches will be held for 25 days. Each team will have a maximum of 18 players including six foreign players. Each team will play each other twice, with the best teams in the league qualifying directly for the finals. The next final will be decided by an elimination match between the second and third placed teams.

Who applies for the teams and how much does it cost to own a team?

Five men’s IPL franchise owners have expressed interest in owning a WIPL team. These include Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals. BCCI officials said that all 10 IPL franchises have bought the tender document to own a WIPL team.

Dabur India Chairman Mohit Burman had said in an interview that Punjab Kings were interested in acquiring a franchise for WIPL. Similarly, Manoj Badale, the owner of Rajasthan Royals said that they are aiming to own a WIPL team. Meanwhile, the base price of the auction is estimated to be Rs 400 crore for each franchise.

Who applies for WIPL media rights?

According to reports, applications have been received from 10 media companies for the league’s media rights. Among the companies that have expressed interest are Disney Star, Sony Networks, Viacom 18, Amazon Prime, Fancode, Times Internet and Google.

Player auction

The WIPL player auction will be held in February and Indian players will be asked to register by January 26. Players will be classified as capped and uncapped. The capped players come in three base prices namely 50 lakhs, 40 lakhs and 30 lakhs. 20 lakhs and 10 lakhs for uncapped players.
