Iranian players without singing the national anthem; Solidarity with the protesters

Doha – Members of the Iranian team did not sing the national anthem at the FIFA World Cup venue in solidarity with the anti-government protests in Iran. Before the first match against England, members of the Iranian team refrained from singing the national anthem. Before the match, Iran’s captain, Alirez Jahanbakhsh, had informed that a joint decision will be taken regarding the singing of the national anthem.

When the national anthem was played at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, the Iranian players stood impatiently. On September 26, Mehsa Amini, a twenty-two-year-old woman, was killed in police custody for allegedly not wearing a hijab. The anti-hijab movement that arose after this remains strong in Iran. Earlier, several sportsmen refrained from singing the national anthem in solidarity with the protesters.
