Ten Studies show that the health of middle-aged people who have difficulty standing alone for seconds on end is at risk. The study found that their health would deteriorate within 10 years and that their risk of death was 84 percent higher. The study was published in the British Journal of Sports.
This is the result of a 2009 study of 1,702 people over the age of 50. They were instructed to stand on one leg only and to place the next leg behind the standing leg. Thus given three chances to stand for ten seconds. One in five later found that the experiment was unsuccessful and that the person’s health was unsatisfactory.
According to the researchers, conducting such physical experiments on older people could help doctors assess their health. The researchers were from the UK, US, Finland, Australia and Brazil.
