Reuters and other foreign media reported on the 26th (local time) that Severodonetsk, a strategic point in the Donbas region, where Ukraine and Russia fought fiercely, was eventually captured by Russia.

Both Russia and Ukraine confirmed the complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Severodonetsk on the 25th.

“The city is now under complete Russian occupation,” Severodonetsk Mayor Oleksandr Struk told state TV. “They are trying to establish their own order.”

Reuters reported that the fall of Severodonetsk was Russia’s biggest victory in the war since the fall of Mariupol last month.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video speech that “I don’t know how much more blows and losses and how much effort I will have to put in before victory is imminent.”

When Severodonetsk fell into Russian hands, Luhansk Oblast was effectively taken over by Russia. Before the war, pro-Russian separatist rebels controlled about half of Luhansk Oblast. Ukrainian forces are poised to continue their resistance in Lisachansk, the last remaining city in Luhansk Oblast.

“It is no longer possible to maintain a defense in ruins and fields,” said Kirillo Budanov, head of Ukraine’s military intelligence service.

At the beginning of the war, Russia tried to attack the northern region, the shortest route to the capital of Kiiu, but failed. The Russian army is gradually expanding the occupied territory based on its overwhelming firepower superiority. However, there are many doubts about how long Russia’s offensive will last despite the favorable war situation.

The Washington Post, citing Western intelligence and military officials, reported that the Russian military’s advance would come to a standstill at some point because the Russian military consumed ammunition very quickly and the loss of equipment and troops was insignificant.

A Russian military blogger also commented on his Telegram account, citing the chronic lack of troops, saying, “It seems that I do not have enough stamina to continue the special military operation in Ukraine (an expression that Russia uses instead of ‘war’).” said

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a recent interview with German media that “Russia will be able to continue fighting for only a few months.”
