(San Francisco = Yonhap News) Correspondent Jeong Seong-ho = In the United States, where Omicron mutation is spreading, the average daily number of new coronavirus infections (COVID-19) has remained at 800,000 for the third day.

The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 16th that the average daily number of new corona19 cases in the United States for 7 days as of the 15th (local time) was 805,69. This is a 2.08-fold increase from two weeks ago, and the rate of increase has slowed compared to the increase rate exceeding three times until the 10th of this month.

In addition, the average daily number of new infections remained at 800,000 for the third day. On the 13th, there were 803,736 people, and on the 14th, 802,157 people.

This is the highest level since the pandemic (a global pandemic of an infectious disease), but the steep rise seems to have stopped.

However, unlike the number of confirmed cases showing signs of stagnation, the number of inpatients and deaths, which are the lagging indicators, is rapidly increasing.

As of the 15th, the average daily inpatients reached 154,452, an increase of 68% from two weeks ago, recording a pandemic high, and the death toll rose by 60% to 1,984, close to 2,000.

New York Governor Kathy Hocal announced on the 15th that there were 47,870 new cases on the 14th, down 47% from a week ago when the number reached 90,000. In addition, the percentage of positive tests among the testers also fell from 23.0% on the 2nd of this month to 14.6%, and the number of hospitalized patients also decreased slightly.

“We are going through the peak of the winter pandemic, but it’s not over yet,” said Governor Hoquel.

Based on various data, the New York Times diagnosed that the spread of COVID-19 in New York, the initial epicenter of Omicron, may have entered a downward trend after peaking on the 9th.

In addition, Northwestern states such as New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island are showing a similar trend, and the situation is improving in New York City, Chicago, the capital Washington DC, and Cleveland.

However, in most other regions, explosive growth is still continuing. For example, in Oregon, Utah, and Alaska, the number of new cases in the past two weeks has increased about fivefold.
