Ismail Sabri Yacoub will be the next Prime Minister of Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Deputy Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yacoub is the new Prime Minister of Malaysia. Malaysian King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmed Shah has announced that Yacoub has the support of 114 members needed to form a government.

Muhyiddin Yassin resigned as prime minister last Monday after losing a majority. Jacob was the Deputy Prime Minister under Muhyiddin.

Yakub, a senior leader of the ruling UMNO, was previously defense minister. Jacob’s appointment is expected to help resolve the country’s political crisis. The king also demanded that the people’s representatives be prepared to defend Kovid, putting aside political differences. Meanwhile, 3.4 lakh signatures have been collected online for the campaign against Jacob’s appointment. Critics say Yakub will repeat Muhyiddin’s rule, which failed in the Kovid defense.
