As the June 1 local elections approach, the Democratic Party of Korea is ‘crying’. Far from providing an opportunity to turn the tide, it was in danger of losing Gyeyang, Incheon, which was considered a ‘win-win’ due to the rise of candidate Lee Jae-myung, even to victory in the by-election.
Compared to four years ago, the current mood of the Democratic Party is even more intense. In 2018, the June 13 local elections were held with a ‘smile’ in the background of the high approval ratings of former President Moon Jae-in and the peaceful mood on the Korean Peninsula. Given the circumstances, this candidate, who said, “I will become the center of the wind,” is confined to Gyeyang, disregarding the title of ‘Chairman of General Election Countermeasures’.
Election D-2, Democratic leadership ‘gathered’ in Incheon
Chairman Lee Jae-myung held a press conference with the public on the 30th, two days before the election, urging the general gathering of supporters with joint emergency countermeasures chairman Yun Ho-jung and Park Ji-hyeon. Chairman Lee said, “I am well aware of the disappointment of the Democratic Party, but we will only look at the people and innovate until the people are satisfied.” ask for it,” he pleaded.
The place where the ‘Top 3’, who are the commanding officers of the election, gathered at Chairman Lee’s camp office in Gyeyang-gu, Incheon. Chairman Yun Ho-jung and Park Ji-hyeon, who were scheduled to support campaigns in Gangwon and Busan, respectively, stopped by here on purpose. Chairman Lee explained, “(Gyeyang press conference) was unavoidable because the general election chairman played two roles.”
“I can’t guarantee victory”… ‘Number 1’ tied to Gyeyang
As he said, meeting in Incheon was inevitable. This was because Chairman Lee could not afford to vacate the constituency. As Gyeyang was a friendly area of the Democratic Party and Chairman Lee served as the presidential candidate of the ruling party, at first he was confident that he would beat his opponent (People’s Strength candidate Yoon Hyung-seon) with ease. However, even in the public opinion poll just before the public opinion poll was banned, the two candidates had a ‘close battle’, making it impossible to guarantee victory.
The fact that the people’s power is concentrating party power on Gyeyang-eul is also the reason that Chairman Lee cannot easily leave his seat. “Gyeyang is at stake not only with Chairman Lee’s personal political life, but also with the fate of the Democratic Party who nominated him as a candidate despite many concerns,” said a member of the Democratic Party of Korea’s metropolitan area.
Chairman Lee spent a full day in Gyeyang. Earlier on the 8th, it was a step far from the declaration of candidacy that “I will throw my all to lead the nation to a majority victory.”
4 years ago, Chu Mi-ae went to catch a hare
Four years ago, the situation of the Democratic Party was the exact opposite. Choo Mi-ae, who was leading the June 13 local election, was the leader of the party and the permanent election chairperson, who traveled all over the battlefield and rough terrain at the end of the election. On the 12th, the day before the election, he made a broad stride along the Gyeongbu Line (Busan → Ulsan → Daegu → Daejeon → Seoul), and the day before, visited Gyeongnam and Seoul Gangnam, areas vulnerable to the Democratic Party.
Chairman Lee’s vacancy is filled by Chairman Yun Ho-jung and Park Ji-hyun. Chairman Yoon visited the Gangwon area on the same day, reminding him of the fact that the ‘Special Act on the Establishment of Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province’ passed the plenary session of the National Assembly the day before, and praised it as “the achievement of Candidate Gwangwon Governor Lee Kwang-jae.” Chairman Park campaigned for support in Busan.
