Unlike dramas, Netflix’s original Korean entertainment shows, which suffered from sluggish global box office sales, climbed into the top 10 worldwide for the first time. It took 7th place on Netflix’s official global rankings. However, the main character is not the ‘Food and Hairy’, which was expected due to the meeting between PD Kim Tae-ho and Netflix. It is a dating program ‘Solo Hell’ where ordinary performers find their mates.
It is evaluated that it is a meaningful achievement in the industry. So far, Netflix has not been able to produce any hit works in the entertainment industry. ‘Eat and Hairy’, which was released desperately, was only a typhoon in a teacup that was less than expected.

According to the Netflix global chart on the 5th, as of last week (December 27 – January 2), the Korean original entertainment ‘Solo Hell’ ranked 7th in the global TV show category (non-English speaking). This is the first time that a Korean entertainment show has officially entered the top 10 in the world. Since the 3rd, it has risen to the top 10 in various countries on a daily basis. In the same week, the original Korean drama ‘Sea of Silence’ ranked first among non-English-speaking TV shows.
Solo Hell is a dating reality show that takes place on the island of Hell where you can only go out as a couple. Influencers such as YouTubers, models, and dancers appeared and gathered topics every day. It was called the Korean version of the American dating show ‘Two Hot Two Handles’.
The box office in various countries such as Asia and the Middle East played a major role in entering the top 10 worldwide. Hong Kong (3rd), Vietnam (3rd), Singapore (3rd), Taiwan (6th), Thailand (6th), Malaysia (7th), as well as Southeast Asian countries such as Saudi Arabia (9th) and Kuwait (9th) ) and Morocco (10th), it was also listed in the top 10 countries in the Middle East.
The industry believes that the success of Solo Hell can be the starting point of the K-entertainment craze. Unlike dramas, entertainment shows high cultural hurdles in each country. Nevertheless, it is evaluated that the fact that it has gained considerable popularity abroad is an opportunity to show the potential of Korean content in the entertainment field.

Netflix had a lot of fun with original Korean dramas such as ‘Squid Game’ and ‘Hell’, but it did not exert any effort in the entertainment field. Despite the steady production of Korean original entertainment over the past few years, the audience’s reaction was bittersweet. ‘Lee Soo-geun’s nunji coach’, ‘The culprit is you! Season 3′ and ‘From the New World’ did not even make it into the top 10 domestic TV show charts. Only the entertainment show ‘Back Spirit’ starring culinary researcher Baek Jong-won ranked 5th to 7th on the domestic charts in October.
‘Food and Hairy’, which was released last month, also failed to meet expectations. The meeting between producer Kim Tae-ho and Netflix once took first place in Korea. However, with the exception of Hong Kong and Singapore, it was not officially ranked in the top 10 in any other country. The concept of a gourmet trip is not enough to make a big impression abroad, and it is evaluated that it is just a ‘typhoon in a teacup’.
