It’s still by making full use of the stick! Japanese-style Metroidvania platformer ‘Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus’ gameplay report[TGS2022]| Game * Spark

“Tokyo Game Show 2022”, the largest game exhibition in Japan, was held on the real location of Chiba Makuhari Messe, which expanded in scale from 2021, and the online platform. SquidShock Studios’ 2.5D adventure platformer “Bo: Lotus Teal Trail]We will present the play report.

This is a 2D Metroidvania-like action game based on Japanese mythology, where you adventure as a little fox youkai. In the TGS2022 version, although the text was not translated into Japanese, it was possible to play up to the beginning, including the tutorial.

You can play until the beginning, so there’s no need for flashy and advanced actions, but I experienced healing at a small shrine and destroying bamboo fences to expand the area that can be explored. The stick used by the main character not only defeats the approaching enemy, but also has a system that allows you to jump again by attacking a lantern or an enemy anywhere on the map.

Therefore, in order to touch the secret things in places on the map, it is necessary to attract enemies well and attack them. There are also gimmicks that can be developed by attacking caterpillar-like enemies that appear in the middle and lifting them into the air and throwing them. This has a puzzle-like element, and as well as being launched to defeat enemies, it can also be used to hit objects to release lanterns and destroy bamboo fences.

Here, one enemy appears, so you can reach the secret in the order of jumping from the scaffold → attack the enemy → jump → attack the lantern → jump.

Another interesting point is that monsters like the giant Gashadokuro appear here and there in the background of the distant scene. Considering that the degree of perfection has been increased and various youkai will appear, it seems that you can enjoy searching for background material. When I talked to the person in charge of the booth, it seems that the “BO” at the beginning of the title means “stick” as it is (since the little fox youkai uses a stick).

Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus is scheduled for full release in Q1 2024 for PC/Nintendo Switch.
