Iran, the rival of ‘Bentuho’, led Iraq to the top of Group A in the Asian final qualifier for the World Cup with the winning goal from striker Alireza Jahanbakhsh. Syria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the same group drew without a goal.
Iran won the 2022 Qatar World Cup Group A match against Iraq 3-0 at the Khalifa Stadium in Doha, Qatar on the 8th (Korean time). Iran, who defeated Syria 1-0 in the first leg, took the lead in the group with this win for two consecutive wins.
Iran, who took the lead from the beginning, took a 1-0 lead with Jahanbaksh finishing a Taremi pass within two minutes of kickoff.
Iraqi manager Dick Advocaat expressed his intention to play offensive football ahead of the Iranian match, but he struggled throughout the match against his top-ranking opponent, Iran.
Iran eventually added two more goals in the second half to overthrow Iraq. In the 24th minute of the second half, Taremi calmly finished a long pass from Sardar Azmun and fled.
In the 45th minute of the second half, Ali Golizadeh scored a goal, completely breaking Iraq’s will to pursue. In the end, Iran took the victory with a margin of three goals.
The match between the UAE and Syria ended 1-1 at King Abdullah II Stadium in Amman, Jordan.
The UAE took the lead with Ali Mabkut’s goal in the 11th minute, but Syria’s Mahmoud Al Baher equalized in the 19th minute.
After the first leg of their match against Lebanon, the UAE had drawn two matches in a row. Syria, who had previously lost 1-0 to Iran, also failed to win the second round.
With this, Iran (6 points) and Korea (4 points) finished first and second in Group A, respectively. The UAE (2 points), which drew in both the first and second rounds, took third place, while Syria, Lebanon and Iraq (with more than 1 point), which had one draw and one loss, form the bottom place.
