Jake Reiner, the eldest son of famed director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, has spoken publicly for the first time about the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents and the murder charges against his brother Nick, describing the ongoing trauma as a “living nightmare.”

In a statement shared on Substack and reported by multiple news outlets, Jake Reiner said he still wakes each morning questioning whether the tragedy is real. “I still wake up every morning having to convince myself that, no, it’s not a dream,” he wrote. “This truly is my living nightmare.”

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Reiner, 68, were found stabbed to death in their Brentwood home on December 14, 2025. Authorities confirmed both died from multiple sharp force injuries. Nick Reiner, their 32-year-old son, was arrested hours after the bodies were discovered and has pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder. He remains in custody ahead of a scheduled court appearance.

Jake Reiner described his parents as his “guiding lights, the foundation of who I am as a human being, and the most giving people I have ever known.” He said they “deserved to be loved, they deserved to be respected, and above all they deserved to be appreciated for how much they gave to all three of us and to the world.”

The statement comes as Nick Reiner prepares to return to court. Jake Reiner noted the emotional toll of grieving his parents while his brother faces trial for their deaths. “One thing I keep coming back to is how frightened they must have been,” he said. “They were the last people in the world to deserve what happened to them.”

Jake Reiner has two siblings: a brother, Nick, and a sister, Romy. The family had appeared together publicly in January 2024 at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, where Rob and Michele Reiner were photographed with Jake and Romy.

Rob Reiner, a celebrated filmmaker known for directing Stand by Me, The Princess Bride, and When Harry Met Sally…, had a career spanning over five decades in film and television. Michele Reiner was known for her philanthropic work and support of arts and education initiatives.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the cause of death as multiple sharp force injuries, though a court order has limited the release of further investigative details. Authorities said the murders occurred hours before the bodies were discovered.

Nick Reiner has been described in prior reports as having struggled with drug addiction and a reported schizophrenia diagnosis, though Jake Reiner’s statement did not reference these details. The plea of not guilty remains unchanged as the case proceeds through the legal system.

As of April 24, 2026, Jake Reiner’s public remarks mark the first extended commentary from any immediate family member since the murders. His words reflect a family grappling with profound loss amid an ongoing criminal case that has drawn significant media attention.
