Hong Kong 01, a media outlet in Hong Kong, published an article presenting a video of a Japanese woman being sexually harassed by four men at a festival in India.

A Japanese woman was harassed by about four men who appeared to be Indians during the Hindu festival of Holi. Holi Festival is a festival to celebrate the arrival of spring, and people paint each other with colored powder and spray colored water on the streets. It is held on the full moon day in November of the Indian calendar and the day after that, which is March in the Christian calendar.

A video of the “incident” posted on Twitter shows four or more young men forcefully smearing colored powder on the face of a woman they don’t like. Some men take the opportunity to hug and touch women. When women’s hair is pulled, they say things like “Ouch, ouch, ouch…” in Japanese. Having said that, I can’t deny that it feels like “overdone.”

Furthermore, the Japanese women did not fully resist until the end, and when the men pulled up, one of them, in confusion, touched the woman’s breast and slapped the man’s cheek.

A video of the incident was posted on Twitter and has been viewed more than 1.9 million times on one count. Many people were outraged, including the famous Indian actress Richa Chandra, who wrote: “The police must arrest these cruel harassing men.”

The video was filmed on March 8th. March 8th is International Women’s Day as designated by the United Nations. This day is known in Chinese as the 38 Women’s Festival, and various related events and ceremonies are held in different places.

Hong Kong 01 said, “This year’s Holi festival coincided with the 38th Women’s Day. I never thought such an outrageous case of harassment would be reported. India’s international image has been tarnished once again. The world became very concerned about the status of women in India.”

Indian police confirmed that the victim was a 22-year-old Japanese tourist, and contacted the Japanese embassy to further investigate the circumstances and background of the incident. However, no complaints have been filed by the woman so far. (Translation/Editing/Hayato Kisaragi)
