(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporters Kim Yeon-jeong and Ahn Chae-won = Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Joo-ho announced on the 8th that the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare will establish a joint task force (TF) to develop measures supporting teachers’ mental health.

During the National Assembly’s government questions session in the education, society, and culture sector, Deputy Prime Minister Lee responded to a query from Representative Eun-ah Heo of the People Power party on the matter of teachers’ mental health. He stated, “The government recognizes the need for special support measures in light of the recent incident at Seoi Elementary School. We will take appropriate actions to address this issue.”

Explaining the formation of a dedicated joint task force, Deputy Prime Minister Lee stated, “In order to support the healing and recovery of teachers’ mental health, both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Health and Welfare will collaboratively develop a comprehensive support plan.”

“We understand the urgency of this matter and have decided to provide mental health check-ups to all teachers who are willing during the second semester of this year,” added Deputy Prime Minister Lee. “Furthermore, for teachers in crisis, we will promptly engage with experts and provide immediate treatment support.”

Deputy Prime Minister Lee emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of child abuse swiftly, stating, “The recent incident in Seoi-cho has raised significant concerns in the field of education. If we fail to address this issue promptly, it will not only jeopardize the rights of students, but also hinder the effective teaching and establishment of proper teacher authority.”
